Using link submission to increase your page ranking
By Mark Fisher
Page Rank and Link Directories The way to build your page rank in search engines, thus increasing your placement, is to create quality back links to your site. A common way to do this is by submission to link directories. There are millions of link directories on the internet; many offer free submission. Most of these however will not give you a link without the "no-follow" attribute. The no-follow attribute is the bane of SEO webmasters; it prevents crawlers from traversing the link, so no-follow links are as good as worthless. Many of the link directories require a reciprocal link before they grant you a no-follow. This kind of defeats the object, because if you link out to many low ranking sites, your page rank will diminish. You should always check this before you submit your sites. We have compiled a list of SEO friendly submission sites. Some basic rules about link submission Match the page title Directories work better if the link title matches that of the target page. Do not submit affiliate links Instead create a domain, or failing that a folder within your domain, that redirects to your affiliate link. You might try using cloaking software such as Affiliate Director. Dont use automated submission software This will mess up your submissions in ways you wont like, such as putting your email address where the link title should be. Most of the software is out of date; many of the directories are inactive and will never review your submissions. Conclusion When used properly link directories can have a profound effect on both the page rank and the ammount of traffic to a site. However the majority of link submission sites are unmaintained and blocked by search. To maintain your SEO you should test out the directories first by submitting links that you are not all that concerned about, and find out if they are getting crawled. I hope this guide proves useful; we have just started our own directory, this one is SEO friendly and free to use!

This is very useful information. Before finding this Intel I had been trawling through Directories one by one, often dismayed by the high fees charged! Thanks for saving me a lot of time.
